Dr Maheswar Neog (1915 – 1995) was an Indian academic who specialised in the cultural history of North East India, especially Assam, besides being an Assamese language scholar and poet. He was a top Indologist and his work covers all disciplines of Indian studies, folk-lore, language, dance, history, music, religion and drama. His research includes multi-dimensional features of Vaishnava renaissance in Assam. A versatile scholar and a visionary thinker, he remained Jawaharlal Nehru Professor in Guahati University and later Saint Sankaradeva Professor at Punjabi University. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1974.

An academe of scholarly household Navamalati Neog Chakraborty is a bilingual translator, poet. She has translated memoirs of Bezbaroa, Nabin Chandra Bordoloi and Dr Neog ; or novels like Dukhe Keora, Bisarjan, Yatra, Chanakya and many others. Translating verses is her forte. Her books have been published by Sahitya Akademi, Niyogi books, Asam Sahitya Sabha, Notion Press and other publishing houses.
