Bengali Poem ‘ Sei Galpota’ – Purnendu Patri

Bengali, also known as Bangla (বাংলা), is the lingua franca of the Bengal region of South Asia. It is the most widely spoken language of Bangladesh and the second most widely spoken of the 22 scheduled languages of India, after Hindi. With approximately 228 million native speakers and another 37 million as second language speakers, Bengali is the fifth most-spoken native language and the seventh most spoken language by total number of speakers in the world.

Purnendu Patri was a Bengali poet, writer, editor, artist, illustrator, and film director. He was best known for his poems and stories, particularly for his poetry collection Kathopokathan, and for his experimentation with book cover design. Jishnu Sen recited his poem ‘ সেই গল্পটা’ -That Story, in Bengali.

Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, in a highly educated family, Jishnu migrated to the United States in the early nineties. Currently he lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his wife and two sons. Jishnu is also the grandson of Jatindranath Sengupta, a famous Bengali poet.

Jishnu is an economist. He has also been pursuing his passions in the arts relentlessly since his college. He enjoys recitation, performing in stage plays, audio plays and audio-visual plays. An avid nature lover, sometimes Jishnu writes poems and recently has been brushing up on his old hobby, sketching and painting.
