Al-Baqa Café, Gaza by Francis Kurkievicz

Translated from the Spanish by Francis Kurkievicz

Poetry cannot begin to contemplate
All the tragedies of Gaza,
Every day social media
Reports – in loco – radical events,
Happenings that hegemonic media
Disdains, conceals and distorts
In favor of “committed” advertisers
With the Hebrew-Zionist narrative;
And today, June 30th, 2025,
On a sunny, relaxed afternoon,
Israeli jets bombarded
The Al-Baqa seaside café,
In the exhausted city of Gaza,
Where a lively children’s party,
With decorated cakes,
Colorful balloons,
Plush teddy bears,

Cheerful music,
Happy grandparents and grandchildren,
Entire families gathered celebrating life,
Celebrating survival
And what remained of humanity among the ruins;
40 people killed instantly,
Severed limbs,
Lakes of blood,
Piles of corpses
Upon tons of rubble;
Photojournalist Ismail Abu Hatab and
Plastic artist Frans al-Salmi
The illustrious sacrificed on this holy day;
The IDF announced yet another successful operation
Against a “Hamas terrorist” cell,
Probably that pink teddy bear
Was the dangerous Hamas leader in northern Gaza.
